Getting into residency isn't everything;
How Many Residency Programs Should One Apply To?
What I am trying to say is when you apply to a program where there are no IMG’s; you might end up empty handed.

Some say apply to 100 or 150 programs. If you can afford it please do. Nobody has a crystal ball to say what the outcome will be, but you never know. But, as you apply be an educated applicant. Apply to as many programs as you want to but first start off with the ones that you meet their requirements and then those slightly above your radar, and if you have the resources still apply to the ones you would like to go to, but do not meet their requirements. For example if their cut off for usmle score is 80 and you had below that in one of the steps, still go ahead and apply to the program.

If you are an IMG , go through the website of program and look at the profile of their residents, if they are all AMG, you can apply to those as a last resort, just incase the unexpected happens. Some programs will not tell you that they do not take foreign medical graduates, they might frame it as you must have one year of US clinical experience, not externship or observership.

Always have a plan B or even C in terms of specialties you can apply to. If you are considering for example family medicine, you should also have internal medicine or vice versa as back up or any other specialty you might have an advantage of getting into. Remember to allocate the appropriate letters or recommendation and personal statement to the appropriate programs. You will be doing yourself a disservice if you apply to a pediatric program with a LOR or personal statement stating how much you love surgery.

That is the $50,000 question. American medical graduates (AMG) on the average apply to about 10 to 20 programs or even less and match in their first three choices. IMG’s, international medical graduates apply on the average to about 85 to 95 programs.

Some say cast your net wide and you will catch a big fish or maybe plenty of fish.  That might be true, but what about if you are fishing in the wrong waters? Let’s say you have a big net that could cover the whole of the Dead Sea and you cast your net into the Dead Sea. Well you’ll end up with nothing! Why? Well, no fish can survive there, too toxic!
