It is the only thing
Getting into residency isn't everything;
How To Select Residency Programs To Apply To
  • Are you an AMG
  • IMG non US citizen
  • IMG US citizen or permanent resident
  • More than 2-3 years out of medical school
  • US clinical experience
  • Multiple attempts in the USMLE
  • Scores less than 80 or as specified by the program
  • Have you passed step 3 yet
  • University program or community based program depending on your credentials

It is better to be an informed applicant rather than using the shot gun approach and spray your pellets, hoping that one might hit the target. It is very important that you find out what the programs requirements are before applying.

It is getting tougher and tougher to get into residency, as hospitals are shrinking and more and more physicians are applying. If you concentrate your efforts to programs you meet their criteria, you should have a better opportunity at getting an interview.

Look at your whole package and see where you have a better chance, for example a community based program or university based. Try and find a balance.

But, don’t get me wrong, you can still apply to a lot of programs, but include the ones that you meet their requirements first before applying across the board.
